Crowns
A dental crown is a custom-made appliance made to cover an entire tooth after it is prepped to return the tooth to its original size and shape. The crown is essentially a cap that is cemented onto the prepared tooth. It is typically made to be the same color as the remaining natural teeth so as not to stand out as being artificial. The goal is to make the crown look just like the rest of the teeth.
Crowns are used in many different dental procedures and other appliances. Crowns are placed on top of root canals and implants and are used to anchor bridges to the remaining teeth for stability and permanence.
Mark W. Sheppard, DDS, helps his patients decide which crown is the best option for their needs.
When in need of a crown, it is specially ordered to be made from the best material to complete the procedure.
Crowns are manufactured with different materials for placement in the mouth and color purposes. The best materials for color matching are all-resin crowns, all-ceramic (or all-porcelain) crowns, or porcelain-fused-to-metal. Stainless steel crowns are only used for temporary crowns. This would never be used long-term. Metal crowns are great for using on back teeth. in the back of the mouth, the color is not as noticeable, but with the higher chewing forces, the metal provides better strength than other types.
